Description:

Embark on an exhilarating journey into the realm of physics aligned with the North Carolina Core Standards for the initial six weeks of the course! Our week-long summer program offers a stimulating blend of classroom instruction, hands-on experiments, and interactive activities to deepen your understanding of fundamental physics principles and phenomena.

Schedule:

Day 1: Introduction to Physics and Scientific Inquiry

  • Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Dive into the world of physics, exploring basic concepts such as motion, forces, and energy through engaging lectures and demonstrations.
  • Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Conduct experiments on motion and force, using equipment such as motion sensors and force probes to explore Newton’s laws of motion.

Day 2: Mechanics: Kinematics and Dynamics

  • Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Learn about the principles of kinematics, including speed, velocity, acceleration, and projectile motion.
  • Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Engage in hands-on activities and experiments to analyze motion graphs, calculate velocity and acceleration, and explore the effects of forces on motion.

Day 3: Energy and Work

  • Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Explore the concepts of energy, work, and power, including the different forms of energy and the conservation of energy principle.
  • Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Conduct experiments to investigate energy transformations, calculate work done by forces, and explore the relationship between work and energy.

Day 4: Waves and Sound

  • Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Discover the properties of waves, including wave motion, frequency, wavelength, and amplitude.
  • Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Engage in hands-on wave experiments, explore sound waves, and investigate the behavior of waves through various mediums.

Day 5: Culminating Projects and Presentations

  • Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Work on culminating projects integrating concepts learned throughout the week.
  • Presentation Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Showcase your projects to peers and instructors, reflecting on your scientific exploration and understanding of physics concepts.
