I am a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Physiology, Health and Clinical Sciences.  My research focuses are community-based physical activity programs for older adults, health risk assessments and physical activity in youth.  

Gabriel Asbell

My background focuses on strength and conditioning as well as exercise testing techniques and modalities. Throughout my academic career, I worked on multiple research studies focusing on body composition analysis techniques, strength and conditioning technology, exercise prescription for those with physical disabilities, . I am currently an adjunct instructor in the department of Applied Physiology, Health, and Clinical sciences and teach courses in the exercise science undergraduate program. I also hold my Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) certification through the National Strength and Conditioning program Association (NSCA).

Human Anatomy & Physiology – Dr. Trudy Moore-Harrison and Gabriel Asbell

This basis of this course is built on the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology processes and systems for students interested in related career paths. However, this course has a much larger focus on expanding students’ understanding of A&P outside of the coventional classroom through opportunities such as performing exercise testing techniques, interacting with Anatomage cadaver technology, and participating in nursing simulation labs. This all serves to encourage students to create individual research project ideas involving human participants data collections.

I am starting my 4th year of my PhD program within biological sciences here at UNC Charlotte. My project includes using an in-vivo mouse model to study chromosomal translocations analogous to leukemia. 

Emilee Trivette

I am a second year PhD student in Dr. Christine Richardson’s lab at UNC Charlotte. I earned my BS in Biology from Charlotte in 2025, during which I conducted undergraduate research. My current research focuses on environmental compounds in our diet that can cause chromosomal translocations analogous to those found in human leukemias. I also have experience with tutoring high school students in STEM and working with kids of all ages!

Nanoscale Science – Molly White and Emilee Trivette

Nanoscale Science is an emerging area of science which has the potential to reshape the world. It is important to introduce this interdisciplinary science to college-bound students to enhance scientific media literacy, increase awareness of the reality and potential of nanomaterials, and to show students how science can be applied in the real world. Participants will be introduced to the major concepts of nanoscale science such as structure of matter, forces and interactions, quantum effects, size-dependent properties, and self-assembly. Students will get to experience hands-on lab activities as well as characterization tool demonstrations while being guided through their own research project.

Dr. Marco Scipioni joined the School of Data Science in 2022 as an associate professor and also serves as the Undergraduate Program Director for Admissions and Engagement. His teaching specializes in Python programming and machine learning and his research focuses on the use of machine learning for the social good. As Undergraduate Program Director for Admissions and Engagement, Dr. Scipioni supports the development of relevant curriculum and a creative learning environment.

Shiloh Carlin

Shiloh is a rising second year bachelor’s student at UNC Charlotte. She is a tennis coach and full time student at UNC Charlotte. She also serves as a member of the tech team and photography/videography team at her church. She has occupied all of these positions for the past five years.

Ashutosh Modi

Ethical Data Science – Dr. Marco Scipioni, Shiloh Carlin, and Ashutosh Modi

Dr. Marco Scipioni’s Ethical Data Science course, offered through Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics at UNC Charlotte, introduces high school students to both the technical and ethical foundations of data science. 

Students learn Python programming, data analysis, data visualization, and introductory machine learning. Throughout the course, they discuss ethical issues related to data and artificial intelligence and explore how these technologies affect people and society. 

By combining technical skills with ethical thinking, Dr. Scipioni helps students become responsible and thoughtful future data scientists.

Dr. Paul Thompson Hunter is an Assistant Professor of English at Longwood University and a faculty fellow at the SEED Rural Innovation Hub. His research interests include healthcare communication design, emerging technologies, and assemblage theory, and his scholarship can be found in scholarly journals including the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, and Communication Design Quarterly, among others. With Richard Johnson-Sheehan, he is an author of Writing Proposals and Grants (3e, Parlor Press). With Mason Pellegrini (University of North Texas) and Adrianna Deptula (Case Western Reserve University), he is a recipient of an ACM SIGDOC Career Advancement Research Grant. 

Marc Rebello

My name is Marc Rebello and I am a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Master’s in English concentrating on linguistics. During my time as a student at UNC Charlotte I conducted research and wrote papers on human and AI pragmatics and linguistic attitudes.

My previous work experience in academic fields includes but is not limited to working as a TA for a general course and a research assistant collecting data. Additionally I was the instructor for an undergraduate course on grammar and writing designed to help improve the writing of students.

Writing Workshop – Dr. Paul Hunter and Marc Rebello

The SVSM Writing Workshop introduces students to the audiences, purposes, contexts, and genres of scientific communication. By the end of the workshop, students are familiar with threshold concepts of scientific communication, including peer review, scientific priority, and data visualization, as well as practical strategies for developing research questions, adapting their work to different audiences, and designing effective reports and posters. The workshop also includes individual 20-minute consultations with instructors and individualized feedback on drafts.
