Bio-Medicine Saturday Academy for High School Students

Embark on a captivating journey into the world of bio-medicine with our dynamic program designed specifically for high school students. Over the course of five Saturdays and two virtual Thursdays, participants will engage in a blend of direct instruction, problem-based learning, and cooperative learning techniques to explore the fascinating intersections of biology and medicine.

Duration:  Five (5) Saturdays and two (2) Virtual Thursdays

Time: 

  • 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays
  • 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Virtual Thursdays

Location: UNC Charlotte Woodward Building

Audience: High school students interested in biology and medicine 

Capacity: 25 students, grades 9 to 12

Program Highlights:

  1. Direct Instruction: Experienced instructors will deliver engaging lectures and presentations to introduce students to fundamental concepts in bio-medicine. Topics covered will include anatomy, physiology, disease pathology, pharmacology, and more.
  2. Problem-Based Learning: Through hands-on activities and case studies, students will delve into real-world medical scenarios and scientific dilemmas. They’ll apply their knowledge to analyze data, diagnose conditions, and propose treatment plans, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  3. Cooperative Learning: Collaborative learning exercises will encourage students to work together in teams, simulating the collaborative nature of medical research and healthcare. By sharing ideas, pooling resources, and tackling challenges collectively, students will develop communication skills and teamwork abilities.
  4. Virtual Thursdays: Two virtual sessions on Thursdays will complement the Saturday sessions, offering opportunities for interactive discussions, guest speakers, and virtual lab simulations. These sessions provide flexibility and additional engagement outside of the classroom setting.
  5. Guest Speakers: Renowned professionals from the fields of medicine, biomedical research, and healthcare will share their expertise and insights with students during the virtual Thursday sessions. These guest speakers offer valuable perspectives and career guidance to aspiring young minds.

Application Fee: $125.00 (Refund Policy: All refund requests must be submitted via email to stem-precollege@uncc.edu and received 30 days prior to the start date of the program. No refunds will be granted within 30 days of the event. Refund request will take 2-3 weeks to process. There are no refunds for no-shows. A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $50.00 will be retained for each enrollment payment. (No exceptions.)
