Application Fee: $250.00 (Refund Policy: All refund requests must be submitted via email to stem-precollege@uncc.edu and received 30 days prior to the start date of the program. No refunds will be granted within 30 days of the event. Refund request will take 2-3 weeks to process. There are no refunds for no-shows. A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100.00 will be retained for each enrollment payment. No exceptions.)

The Summer Scholars program will focus on a coding experience for high school students (grades 9-12) June 10-14 and for middle school students (grades 6-8) July 8-12, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily for both weeks.  Parents and students may register for each weekly engagement independently. Enrollment will take place from February 26 through March 29, 2024. The maximum capacity for each week is 50 pre-college students.

Python Pioneers: Exploring Computing Frontiers

Embark on an exhilarating journey into the world of computer science with our one-week Python-powered camp! Designed for curious minds eager to explore diverse realms of computing, this immersive experience offers a dynamic blend of hands-on activities, engaging workshops, and collaborative projects.

Throughout the week, participants will delve into various fields of computing, including data science, artificial intelligence, web development, and cybersecurity, all through the versatile lens of Python programming. Guided by seasoned instructors, students will unlock the power of Python as they tackle real-world challenges, develop essential coding skills, and unleash their creativity.

Learning outcomes include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop algorithmic thinking skills.
  • Understand fundamental programming concepts, including syntax, structure, and control flow.
  • Learn about creating modular and reusable code using functions.
  • Gain and understanding  of manipulating data collections, including data structures, objects, and databases.
  • Understand input/output operations for file handling and user input.
  • Explore software reliability and quality assurance principles, including error handling, testing, and debugging.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of networking concepts for web services and APIs.
  • Discover best practices for writing clear and maintainable code.
  • Become familiar with essential software development tools, including IDEs, GitHub, and Generative AI.

From crafting intelligent algorithms to building interactive websites and exploring the intricacies of cybersecurity, each day presents exciting opportunities for discovery and innovation. By the end of the camp, participants will emerge with a comprehensive understanding of Python’s applications across different domains and the confidence to pursue further exploration in the vast landscape of computer science.

An orientation will take place for all Python Pioneers participants (middle and high school students) on Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A separate orientation was originally scheduled for the middle and high school students, but due to scheduling conflicts has been changed. The orientation will take place via Zoom and will be recorded and posted here at the conclusion of the orientation. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation and logistical details will be provided after the orientation.

Interested parents and students will need to apply by providing:

  • a completed application;
  • application fee; and
  • transcript/most recent report card.
